Taxi Journeys Are Now Safer With New Smartphone App

A new Smartphone app has been developed which allows the public to check if a taxi is correctly licensed or not. Available for both iPhone and Android phones, the app will help to improve the safety of both passengers and taxi drivers. The scheme, named ?Am I Safe??has been launched in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, and is currently in use in Bedford, Luton, Watford and Milton Keynes. Passengers will be able to enter the registration number of a taxi into their phone and the app will say whether the vehicle is licensed or not. If the vehicle is not registered, an alert will be sent to the police and council.

Using a global positioning signal linked to the mobile phone, the app will store the time, location, car registration and user name, making it easy to track the passenger if required. It will also send a message to a nominated friend or family member giving the location of the taxi and registration number. The app will also help improve the safety of taxi drivers who often become victims of assault by passengers or lose fares by passengers who run away without paying the fare.

The development of this app will send out a message to criminals who believe they can start hiring out just any used cars. Milton Keynes Council is promoting the app, which is available to download from their website, and by the end of 2011, the app will be available across the whole of the UK. The app currently costs ?2.99 and 10p from each download will be donated to various charities by the company behind the mobile serve, Texemtel.

Warnings over unregistered taxis have been well documented for years, so this new development will be welcomed by many, especially those who regularly travel solo. The knowledge that the taxi or private hire vehicle a passenger is travelling in is fully licensed will be very reassuring.
