Fancy A Self-driven Car?

Ever since the heyday of science fiction movies constructing a self-driving car has been a challenge the car industry so far has been unable to meet, at least not commercially. At the turn of the century, an American Defence Agency Research Group issued a challenge to the automotive industry to produce an autonomous car and several trials have been held since then. Back in 2007 six competitors finished a 60 miles long course without any accidents. But where does this take the future of the car industry?

A self-driven car means that it has to steer, drive, brake and negotiate hazards entirely on its own without accidents or incidents. In theory it won?t have accidents, won?t get tired while driving and won?t get road rage. It will be like your own personal taxi service without the annoying driver but what happens if an autonomous car is produced and it does have an accident or injure someone?

Legal implications aside, many car manufacturers still continue working on the autonomous car and in the process develop technologies which benefit the present day consumer. These technologies include features such as Fords new intelligent cruise control system which maintains a set distance to the car in front.

But the range of scenarios a self-driving car has to contend with means that technology still has a long way to go before cars such as this become an everyday reality. In the meantime we?re probably stuck driving used Ford cars instead of self-driving ones.
